As several trips to the casino have taught us time and time again, sometimes the risk is worth the reward and other times it’s sadly not. And although it’s not always possible for us to visit the likes of Sin City, Reno or St. Tropez to gamble to our heart’s content and experience all of this, gambling movies are always readily available to watch via the online media giant, Netflix. So if your bankroll is a bit limited right now, you can still get your gambling fix while watching some of the best gambling movies on Netflix in our list that are frequently available to stream.

If you’ve ever wanted to see the world of gambling from the perspective of a professional dealer, then the ‘Croupier’ just might be for you. This particular film explores the dark side of the world of gambling by painting a rather unusual portrait of the casino world – at least the part we are used to seeing on the big screens. Director Mike Hodge has created a story told from the dealer’s perspective. In contrast to many other casino movies, the film stays away from the lavish luxury casinos of the Las Vegas strip and other casino towns and focuses on smaller card rooms in London where people gamble for more than just their paychecks. In the ‘Croupier’, a cold and rough gambling world is presented to the audience, and the luxurious world of a high roller casino seems far, far away.
Stars: Matt Damon, Edward Norton, John Malkovich, John Turturro, Gretchen Mol
Largely hailed as the quintessential poker movie, this film follows the trials and tribulations of law student/poker genius Mike McDermott, played by Matt Damon. While trying to manage school and a relationship, McDermott navigates the waters of the underground poker scene in New York to earn his stake for the World Series of Poker.
3. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Stars: Johnny Depp, Benicio Del Toro, Tobey Maguire
Netflix: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The cult-favourite starring Johnny Depp centers around a sportswriter and his drug-inspired misadventures with his lawyer through a three-day romp starting in Los Angeles and ending in Vegas. If you enjoyed the book, you’ll also be surprised how much you’ll enjoy the movie. Depp’s portrayal of author and gonzo journalism renegade Hunter S. Thompson is both over the top and surprisingly heartfelt. The two built a relationship during the filming of the movie that lasted until Thompson’s suicide in 2005.
2. Ocean’s 11
Stars: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Andy Garcia
Netflix: Ocean’s 11
This remake of the classic Rat Pack comedy from the 1960s is as much an action movie as a comedy. Eleven professional criminals are put together for a heist against a bank with $150 million in the vault – all of it from three major Las Vegas casinos (Bellagio, Mirage and MGM Grand.) These casinos are owned by Terry Benedict (Garcia) who’s dating Tess (Roberts), the Ocean 11 leader Dan’s (Clooney) old girlfriend. This makes the whole operation even more personal. Ocean’s 11 is an action-packed movie, and just as in the original, it contains some great acting performances from the Hollywood elite of its time.
