Jonny Evans is known for his defensive skills on the pitch with Manchester United, but recently the Irishman proved that he has skills in another arena -- the poker arena.
Evans joined Phil Jones, Rafael da Silva, Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher and Danny Welbeck this past week to play the MUFC PartyPoker Challenge.
The event is a charity poker event that will be televised on MUTV and will benefit a Northern Irish hospice.
Evans won the event last year and looked to repeat as champion.
Prior to the event, PartyPoker sponsored pro Tony G gave the players some poker tips to help them look at least competent for the cameras.
Welbeck Gets Off to Fast Start, Comes Crashing Down
Early on in the game, Welbeck looked to be in great position to win as he was all-in against both Cleverley and Rafael da Silva.
Welbeck flopped two pair with A-J and beat out the A-K of Cleverly and Da Silva's straight draw.
Welbeck's early triple-up would not last as he fell in third place, leaving Evans and Fletcher to battle for the title.
In the final hand, Fletcher was all-in with a flush draw against a lowly pair of sixes for Evans. The flush would fail to fill and Evans repeated as champion.
Of his victory, Evans said “I’m over the moon. Especially to be two-time champion. Some people will say I am lucky but now I have proven I am the number one champ.”
Evans pulled off an impressive feat with his back-to-back victories in the MUFC PartyPoker Challenge.
While the event is a lighthearted charity event, it's still very difficult to pull off consecutive victories in poker regardless of the skill level involved.
Evans is quickly proving that he has the skills needed to be a solid poker player and it would not be surprising to see an online site sign the United defender to a celebrity sponsorship deal sometime in the future.
