D’alembert Betting System
The D’alembert betting system is a popular casino betting strategy. Sometimes called the Pyramid betting system, the D’alembert betting system is a negative betting system that is named after an 18th-century mathematician – Jean le Rond D’alembert.

The betting strategy is based on his Law of Equilibrium. The Law basically states that over a long period of time, an individual can expect to have a higher probability of winning immediately following a loss (and vice versa).
Unfortunately, in casino gambling, the short-term nature of the game all but negates the mathematical principles of the Law of Equilibrium.
Nevertheless, many gamblers use the D'alembert betting system in roulette.
D'alembert Betting System - How it Works
The D'alembert betting strategy is rather simple - after each loss, the player increases his or her bet by one unit. Or, after each win, the player reduces his or her bet by one unit.
For example, if you start by betting $10 and you lose, then your next bet will be $20. If you lose again, then the third bet will be $30. If you win the $30 bet, then you will drop your next bet back down to $20.
Unlike other betting systems, there are no cycles that immediately drop you back down to the initial $10 bet. Each bet is either 1 unit higher or lower than the last, depending on the whether you won or lost. A Contra-D'alembert system is also sometimes employed, which reverses the strategy (bets are increased on wins and decreased on losses).
Benefits of the D'alembert Betting System
One of the main advantages of the D'alembert betting system is that it is easy to employ.
However, the strategy is considered a risky one, given the potential for bets to skyrocket after a run of losses. Still, the betting system is less risky than the popular Martingale strategy, which sees players doubling their bet after each lost bet.
The D'alembert strategy is most often used for roulette. This is because roulette is a pure game of chance, which often requires risky betting strategies to deliver high returns.
