A
American Roulette: Unlike European roulette which you’ll hear a lot more about later, in this version of roulette, the wheel has no less than 38 pockets. These pockets consist of the numbers 1-36, along with zero and double zero pockets. American roulette gives the house a higher edge than its European counterpart.
B
Backtrack: The outer rim of the wheel where the ball is spun.
Bet on the Layout: A wager which is placed anywhere on the numbers part of the table.
Biased Numbers: A roulette term that everyone should know, this refers to the numbers on the wheel which have statistically been proven to hit more often than others based on long-term analysis. There are many stories and urban legends of players scoring large wins on the roulette table based on their exploitation of biased numbers.
Black Bet: This term is used to refer to a wager that the next number will be black.
Bottom Track: The bottom track is the slanted, inner area of the roulette wheel which remains immobile when the roulette wheel is spun. The roulette ball slides down the bottom track before bouncing into the wheel head and its final resting place in a pocket.
C
Carre: One of the French roulette terms used to refer to a Corner Bet (refer to Corner Bet for further explanation of this term).
Chameleon Strategy: A roulette term used to describe a player who is mimicking the strategy of other players who are doing well at the roulette table.
Check Rack: This refers to the tray where the casino chips are kept.
Cheval: One of the French roulette terms used to refer to a Spill Bet.
Colonne: One of the French roulette terms used to refer to a Column Bet.
Column Bet: When a bet is placed on one of the three available columns (each one consisting of 12 numbers). This pays two to one.
Combination Bet: Any bet that has one or more chips on two or more numbers.
Corner Bet: A single bet that one of the four numbers on the layout will win.
Croupier: Sometimes referred to as the dealer, croupier is the more formal term for the casino employee who takes care of the roulette table.
D
Dozen Bet: This bet can be placed on one of three available groups of 12 numbers; 1-12, 13-24, or 25-36. The dozen bet pays 2 to 1.
Double Zero: This refers to the pocket on the roulette wheel marked “00” which is specifically found on American roulette wheels. These wheels are also known as “double zero” wheels.
Double Up System of Betting: This refers to a system of betting where the player increases his bet by two after a loss in order to regain some of the money he played on the previous bet.
E
En Plein: The French term for Straight Up bet (please find Straight Up bet below).
En Prison: This French phrase literally translates to mean “in prison” and is a rule applied to even-money wagers only. When a zero is hit, some online casinos will allow the player to either take back half his or her bet or leave it “imprisoned” for a another spin. If the next spin gives another zero, the entire wager is lost.
European Roulette: This was the original version of roulette and is also the one most commonly found in European and Asian casinos. Unlike the American version, in European roulette only one zero is used which has the happy effect of lowering the house edge.
Even Money: Refers to any bet which pays 1 to 1.
F
Five Number Bet: Arguably the worst bet that one can make when playing on an American roulette wheel due to the fact that a player bets that 0,00,1,2, or 3 will hit.
H
High Bet: Refers to the bet one makes that the next spin will hit between the numbers of 19 and 36.
I
Inside Bet: A bet made on the numbered, inside area of the roulette table. These bets cover only individual numbers and small groups of numbers and pay out at relatively high odds (the opposite of the inside bet is the outside bet).
L
La Partage: Reminiscent of the aforementioned En Prison rule, the player loses half their bet and doesn’t enjoy the option of leaving their bet “in prison” for a later spin. La Partage is used for ‘outside’ even-money wagers Red/Black, High/Low, Odd/Even and can also apply when the result is 0.
Line Bet: Refers to a wager that players can make that one of the six numbers of the two rows of three numbers will win.
Low Bet: When a player wagers that a number between 1 and 18 will hit.
M
Marker: The marker is the apparatus used by the croupier to clearly mark the winning number after each spin. Players are not allowed to place new bets for the upcoming spin until the croupier has removed the marker from the table.
Mini Roulette: Available at some online casinos, this game features a smaller wheel that which is made up of only 13 numbers (0-12) instead of the standard amount. Payouts are adjusted accordingly. In addition to this, many Mini Roulette games return half of all losses when a spin results in a zero.
N
No Action: If the croupier calls no action once during a spin, all bets are cancelled and the casino repeats the action from the beginning. Bets can be removed after no action is called.
O
Orphans: This term is commonly used in European casinos and refers to a bet on 3 specific numbers which are: 6, 34 and 17. These numbers are neighbours on the roulette wheel.
Orphelins: Also used in European casinos, the “orphelin” bet is a bet on a specific group of numbers on a section of the roulette wheel where the numbers are neighbours on the wheel.
Outside Bets: This is when a player places a wager on the outside of the felt layout of the roulette table. These bets generally cover large sections of the roulette wheel and pay out at much lower odds.
P
Parlay: This term refers to the doubling of a bet after a win.
Pockets: The roulette term is used in reference to the spaces on the roulette wheel in which the roulette ball might land. Each pocket has a unique number, ranging from 1-36, and there is also a 0 pocket (and a 00 pocket on an American roulette wheel). Half of the numbered pockets are red, the other half are black, and the zeros are green.
R
Red Bet: This refers to an outside bet that pays 2-1 where the player wagers that the next spin will hit red.
S
Six Line: This refers to a bet which covers two adjacent rows of numbers on the roulette layout (covering six numbers in all). This bet traditionally pays out at a rate of 5-1.
Split: This term refers to a bet which covers two adjacent numbers on the roulette table and is made when a player puts his chips on the intersection of two numbers. Traditionally, this type of bet pays out at odds of 17-1.
Straight Up Bet: This term refers to a bet which is made on a single number and which a player makes by placing chips on that specific number on the table layout. This bet traditionally pays out at odds of 35-1.
Street: This refers to a bet made on a row of three numbers on the roulette table layout which is made by placing chips on the edge of that row. Traditionally, this bet has 11-1 odds.
T
Transversale: The French term for Street Bet.
Trio Bet: This is the same bet as the aforementioned Street Bet. In the trio bet, you bet that one of three numbers will be the winning number.
V
Visual Wheel Tracking: This is the term to describe the process of following the ball and wheel with your eyes and being able to predict where it will land.
Voisins du Zero: A French term mostly used in European casinos to describe a wager on a particular group of numbers on the section of the roulette wheel which is next to the zero. If you actually translate the word “voisins”, it literally means neighbours.
Z
Zero: This refers to the pocket on a roulette wheel marked with a 0. All roulette wheels contain a “single zero” space, however, American roulette wheels have this and an additional double zero pocket.
