Union Plaza

13 September 2010 8:20pm By: Rex

Well, it looks like another one may bite the proverbial dust.

On November 12, 2010, the venerable Plaza Hotel in Downtown Las Vegas will be "temporarily" closing its doors, and it will be laying off 400 workers in the process.

According to a statement from the owners, this will not be a permanent closing, rather, The Plaza will be down for only 12-18 months so that major renovations may be performed on the property.  Said Tamares Real Estate (owners since 2004) "[we] will be investing a substantial amount of money into [the] Plaza Hotel and Casino, including renovating all 1,037 guestrooms and hallways, new restaurant and bar concepts and upgrading the casino floor.”

Once reopened, the hotel is planning on adopting the moniker "Union Plaza".

Even though the hotel will be completely out of commission, the casino, Firefly Restaurant and the "Rat Pack is Back" show are scheduled to remain open.  At least that is the word at the present time.

Now, you would be forgiven if all of this gives you an eerie sense of deja-vu.  In 2006, the Lady Luck closed for twelve months to be "renovated"... and it has remained closed ever since.  Also adding to the conspiratorial feelings of this particular closure is the fact that The Plaza has told its employees that the layoffs are permanent, not temporary.  A more skeptical or negative person might smell a rat (pack is back), but alas, there is no place for pessimism in Las Vegas.  The city is just going through a temporary correction to shake out the weak hands, and it will emerge from this minor setback leaner, meaner, and more profitable than ever.

At least so I've been told.

Mostly by people who live in Las Vegas.

And who own homes.

And can't get out.

I digress.

I really hope that the party line on this closure meshes with reality.  I hope it is temporary, and I hope it opens back up and re-employs another 400 people.  Even though I grew to hate, loathe, and despise the Las Vegas Valley as a whole, I still have some affection for Rexville and the greater Downtown environs.  It's the one part of town that I liked more with each passing year instead of the other way around.  Downtown has been making a larger concerted effort for the tourist gaming dollar since the depression began, and it disappoints me that it continues to suffer.

Each quarter when gaming numbers are released, those numbers show Downtown taking the lion's share of losses.  Even though Fremont Street delivers themes, free concerts, free overhead shows, and generally superior gaming odds ... tourists seem reticent to reward their efforts.  It seems patently unfair.  Sometimes the world is just an unjust place.  Frankly, I would rather see every Harrah's property close before a single Fremont venue gets the axe.

Last but not least, Tamares Real Estate issued a statement assuring the public that this closure will not affect either of their other two properties ... the Las Vegas Club and the Western.

Oh Thank God!

I think we'll all sleep better tonight knowing that The Western's future is not in jeopardy.  The wrecking ball can have the Bellagio, but it will pry the Western from my cold, dead hands.  That's one gem that we cannot afford to lose under any circumstances.

Anyway, I sit here in Las Vegas now, in a house which barely has any furnishings remaining, and hearing the news of this potential closure a mere one mile to the north is yet another bummer.  Overall, it's been somewhat of an eye opening trip back "home".  I head back to the great Pacific Northwest tomorrow, and I do so with a little more perspective than I had before.

Since I will be in Las Vegas for another 24 hours, I may drop by for some parting shots of The Plaza.

Who knows, it just might be my last opportunity to do so.

Rex-- What a send-off on your way out of Dodge. Keep up the great stories.

All the properties Tamares bought have gone downhill in a major way. I doubt the Plaza hotel will ever re-open.

It's sad to see my beloved Downtown treated this way.

Barrick/Tamares have driven all their properties into the ground.

The Plaza: The only casino where a drug dealer approached me in the casino on the actual casino floor. It smells in there, and it's a haphazard collage of dated decay.

Vegas Club: They took out their excellent coffee shop and turned their old school, upscale restaurant into the coffee shop. I stayed here 2 years ago. The $2 martinis were great, but the run down room, complete with the drug dealer who knocked on the door, made this a property not worth returning to.

The Western: Blackjacks now play even money unless you're playing at least $5/hand. If you're playing $5/hand, there's better places to gamble. They took out most of the penny slots, there's better drink specials at casinos under the canopy, and their hotel rooms were also closed for 'temporary' renovations some while back.

Rex, I know you had a bad experience at the Gold Spike, but Siegel has done a lot with that place since taking it off Tamares' hands. Other than allowing time share people to accost you on the way in, I have yet to have any problems there. Cheap games, friendly staff, clean.

Tamares needs to sell their properties back to Gaughan for pennies on the dollar and let him restore them to their previous glory. The rooms at the Plaza won't be back under their current owner.

When Tamares bought The Western they said they were going to renovate it. They never put 1 dime in the place.

Just last night I was reading the trip reviews on The Western. The are very funny/sad. I had never heard of this place.

The Plaza was never anything special to me - but like Rex I would rather see her do well then not. I was planning to eat at the Firefly Lounge this coming Oct. Looks like it might be my only chance.

I feel that the Tamares casinos in the Downtown area will end up like the Octaivis Tower at Caesars; the rooms at the "new" Union Plaza will be just like apartment lofts: they will stay empty. Probably in a more/less permanent way. Then it gets closed and demolished (or if not, simply mothballed.)

Then it will be a domino effect on EVERY hotel (and casino) in town. Starts with Downtown, moves to the outskirts then the Strip.

Unless they have something up thier sleeve AND know what they're about to do (the owners of the Plaza,) I doubt that a revitalization of the hotel and a possible strong economy that put Vegas in 3rd gear some 5-to-10 years ago will come back anytime soon. It may take years...probably much too late for the joint.

Same thing happened at Binions (casino still open but no hotel). I'm staying at the Golden Nugget 9/22-26 for $65 a night. Nobody wants to stay at a shit-hole hotel for 30/40 bucks a night when for 20 more you can stay at a nice place. Las Vegas club will be next.

i barely ever set foot in that place. i go downtown a lot, but rarely cross the street to its casino, and when i did, i wasn't enticed, for whatever reason. am i the only one who doesn't cross the street to enter the plaza?

and isn't the plaza the place w/ the tennis courts on the roof?

I stopped going to the Plaza when they took out the Omaha Lounge home of my favorite lounge act the Sunspots.

I always had a good time at the Union Plaza. Our purpose was to gamble and they and their neighbors had good gambling conditions. Too many high educated professionals tried to squeeze and re-squeeze the fruit of life from the place.

I stayed at the Plaza a little over a year ago, and even at that time the rooms where in a pretty bad state. I think they are giving themselves a big enough window so that the economy at least is ticking along a bit better.

I'm not optimistic about the closure either. I'm far from a fan of the Plaza, but I hate to see any of these old places die. Maybe Goodman will get his wish and the whole place will be imploded.

If you head down there could you update us on the problem with the street kids on Fremont? It sounded like a pretty nasty situation a few months ago.

Temporarily = Permanent. Plaza will never reopen. Sad.
