How to Play Sic Bo - Get to know Sic Bo Rules

When it comes to “tai sai” commonly known in the West as Sic Bo or ‘Small Big’, the rules of how to play Sic Bo are as simple as the requirements a player needs to get into the game. Offered in all the largest brick and mortar casinos, as well as the best online casinos, this three dice caper is a far cry from its distant cousin, Craps - in fact, the whole game is essentially based on whether or not one can guess the outcome of the roll of three mighty dice. While Sic Bo and Craps both use the same table layout, the rules and regulations which govern the former are way easier to understand which of course frees up all your energy to not only play, but to enjoy the Sic Bo payouts which range from even money up to 150 to 1.

Bet Types and Payouts

Despite the fact that this game is one of the easiest on the block to play, the amount of bets and bet types one can make is nothing if not vast thanks to the fact that the betting options available for Sic Bo are dependent on the combinations one is able to achieve with three dice. The player is allowed to wager as many combinations as he desires per game and must wait for the dice to be shaken by a dealer who usually uses a vibrating platform under a circular glass cover. It is only once all bets have been submitted that the dealer will start up the dice shaker. After the dice shaker stops shaking, the numbers that the dice land on will appear on a display and the corresponding winning combinations will simultaneously light up on the table. The round comes to an end when the dealer removes all losing bets from the table and issues payouts to the winners.

In order for one to learn how to play Sic Bo properly, we at CasinoTop10 have gone the extra mile and divided the bets into eight main types which we will discuss in some detail below:

1/ The first bet revolves around the player betting on one specific number which must come up on all three dice simultaneously. This particular bet is known as Three of a Kind. However, for very obvious reasons, this is the hardest bet for one to achieve as there are 216 (6 x 6 x 6) dice combinations and only one of them can give you a 1,1,1 or 2,2,2 or 3,3,3 or 4,4,4 or 5,5,5 or 6,6,6. Should you miraculously hit three of the same number, the reward is pretty sizeable as this bet pays 150 to 1, but really and truly, keeping in mind that your winning chances are 1 out of 216, this is not the wisest bet for you to make and gives the casino an almost unparalleled advantage.

2/ The second bet which has aptly been named Two of a Kind consists of the player betting on one number which must appear on two of the three dice (1,1 or 2,2 or 3,3 or 4,4 or 5,5, or 6,6). The Two of a Kind bet pays 8 to 1, although your chances of winning are 5.82% as there are 12 ways of making such a combination.

3/ The third bet or Any Three of a Kind bet is when a player bets that the same number from 1 to 6 will appear on all three dice such as either a 1,1,1 or 2,2,2 or 3,3,3 or 4,4,4 or 5,5,5 or 6,6,6. Any Three of a Kind pays 24 to 1 and you have 6 times more of a chance to win than you would if you play Three of a Kind. The probability of this bet is 6 out of 216 (or around 2.78%).

4/ The Small area bet pays even money and consists of the player betting that the sum of the three dice combined will be equal to 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 (excluding a Three of a Kind). Thus, if the player wagers the 3 (3 ones), it is not a winning bet, and neither are the hardways 6 and 9. This provides the casino with a house edge. If you look at the Small bet closely you will be able to see that half of the dice combinations bet will give you a 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 or 10. If players exclude the Three of a Kind, they would be excluding the 1,1,1, the 2,2,2 and the 3,3,3. Thus, by doing this they would be directly excluding 3 possibilities out of 108 (216/2) and the chances of winning would be 105 out of 216 (or 48.61%).

5/ Similar to the Small area in what is does is the Big area which also pays even money and where players are invited to bet that the sum of the three dice will be equal to 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, or 17 (excluding a Three of a Kind). Hence, the 18 (3 sixes) is not a winning bet and neither are the hardways 12 and 15 – this again provides the casino with a house edge.

6/ The sixth kind of bet that a player can undertake can be traced back to the Sic Bo table layout itself which consists of the numbers 4 to 17. As you have probably guessed, these numbers correspond to the sums you can get by rolling the three dice. Thus, by betting on a number from 4 to 17, you can look forward to the following payout odds:

• If the sum is 4, winning bets are paid 50 to 1
• If the sum is 5, winning bets are paid 30 to 1
• If the sum is 6, winning bets are paid 18 to 1
• If the sum is 7, winning bets are paid 12 to 1
• If the sum is 8, winning bets are paid 8 to 1
• If the sum is 9, winning bets are paid 6 to 1
• If the sum is 10, winning bets are paid 6 to 1
• If the sum is 11, winning bets are paid 6 to 1
• If the sum is 12, winning bets are paid 6 to 1
• If the sum is 13, winning bets are paid 8 to 1
• If the sum is 14, winning bets are paid 12 to 1
• If the sum is 15, winning bets are paid 18 to 1
• If the sum is 16, winning bets are paid 30 to 1
• If the sum is 17, winning bets are paid 50 to 1

7/ If the player bets on two different numbers (which need to appear on at least two of the three dice), this bet is called a Duo and it pays 5 to 1. The dice combinations you can bet on to fulfill the requirements of a Duo bet are: 1,2 or 1,3 or 1,4 or 1,5 or 1,6 or 2,3 or 2,4 or 2,5 or 2,6 or 3,4 or 3,5 or 3,6 or 4,5 or 4,6 or 5,6. In order for a Duo bet to be valid, the two numbers bet on cannot be the same.

8/ The last type of bet that we will be talking about is the One of a Kind bet where you bet on a single number that must come up on 1, 2, or all 3 of the dice when they stop rolling. The payout table of this bet depends on the following:

• If the number of your choice comes up on one of the three dice, you are paid even
• If the number of your choice comes up on two of the three dice, you are paid 2 to 1
• If the number of your choice comes up on three of the three dice, you are paid 3 to 1

Learn how to play Sic Bo and rule the dice roost!

Although many players choose to liken the game of Craps to Sic Bo, the reality is that Sic Bo’s use of three dice instead of two opens it up to a whole new range of exciting and interesting combinations which does nothing if not heighten the fun aspect of playing casino games. Even when comparing Sic Bo to casino staples such as roulette for example, the chances of winning on even bets are 18 out of 37 or 48.64% on a single zero wheel and 18 out of 38 or 47.37% on a double zero wheel. Thus, playing Sic Bo on even money bets such as the Small/Big variety can actually be likened to the chances of winning at single zero roulette with the Three of a Kind bet acting as the zero. Ultimately, despite the fact that Sic Bo has been relegated to the back seat when it comes to casino world, this unlikely underdog has as much to offer as any other casino game on the web and if you take the time to learn how to play Sic Bo properly, you will find that you can profit greatly from your newfound knowledge.
