Poker Movie "Runner, Runner" Coming Soon
A new poker movie called "Runner, Runner" from the writers of "Rounders" is slated to hit the theaters in fall of 2013.
The movie will have plenty of star power with Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake starring in the poker flick that's a dramatic thriller set in the world of illegal online gambling.
Producers include Leonardo Di Caprio´s company Appian Way as well as other well-known producers including Jennifer Davisson Killoran, Michael Shamberg, and Stacey Sher. The movie is set to be released on September 27, 2013.
The plot line involves businessman Ivan Block (played by Ben Affleck) who runs an offshore online gambling business. Timberlake plays Richie, a college student who loses all his money gambling online and travels to Costa Rica to confront Block.
Block eventually takes Richie under his wing and offers him a job helping run his shady operation, with the stakes quickly escalating as the movie progresses.
Screenwriters Koppelman and Levien began writing the script in August 2010 and turned in a first draft by January 2011, with “Runner, Runner” in production by early 2012.
Both Affleck and Leo DiCaprio know their way around a poker table, competing in high-profile events in the past such as the WSOP and both were involved in a publicized case in which high-stakes celebrity poker games made headlines.
Some of the games they played in were arranged by Molly Bloom, a socialite poker hostess who was recently charged in a federal sting that arrested more than 30 individuals involved in catering to Wall Street elite and celebs with high stakes poker and sportsbetting.
It'll be difficult for "Runner, Runner" to recapture the magic of "Rounders"; while "Rounders" wasn't a huge box-office success it's got a special place in the hearts of many poker players, with many listing it as one of the best poker movies ever made and inspiring entire legions of new poker players to take up the game.
