Top Five Casino Heaters of All Time

Craps is particularly suited for some amazing heaters, with shooters going on very long rolls before finally crapping out, but blackjack and poker also have some legendary heater tales of their own.

Heaters may be the stuff of legend or dreams for many gamblers but for some of the lucky few gamblers below they were very real, and their ticket into gambling lore as well as some huge paydays.

1. Archie Karas – Had All Binion’s $5k Chips

Widely acknowledged as the “greatest gambler of all time”, Karas borrowed $10,000 from a friend in 1992 and headed to Binion’s in Las Vegas for what would turn into one of the greatest gambling heaters of all time.

Karas took on the world’s top poker players – including Chip Reese, Stu Ungar, and Doyle Brunson – and ran that $10,000 into a bankroll of over $17 million over several years of play.

When the poker action dried up Karas didn’t miss a beat, betting $100,000 on a single roll at the craps tables and his heater continued; Karas was said to have won every single $5,000 that Binion’s had at one point, up over $40 million in profits at his peak during his three year heater from 1992-1995.

Like many heaters, though, the good times wouldn’t last, with Karas losing $30 million back in just three weeks in mid-1995.

By the end of 1995 he’d have lost it all back, proving that what goes up often comes crashing back down.

2. Stanley Fujitake – 118 Rolls Before Crapping Out

Fujitake was a regular at the California Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas when he bellied up to the craps tables and picked up the dice on May 28th, 1989.

Little did he or anyone else know that he was about to embark on one of the most amazing heaters in casino history, rolling for 3 hours and 6 minutes (for a total of 118 rolls) before finally crapping out.

With Fujitake and most of the table maxing out their bets during his epic streak, the casino lost well over $1 million during his heater.

3.Kerry Packer – $60 Million? I’ll Flip You for it.

Packer is another legendary gambler. Like Karas, he’s equally famous for his huge losses as much as for his amazing heaters.

The billionaire businessman and Australian media tycoon gambled for the highest stakes possible, always looking to up the ante.

His biggest wins include a run that saw him win $30 million at MGM Grand in 1997 over several days of gambling and several other wins of $10 million or more at various UK casinos.

On the flip side, Packer also reportedly lost $20 million in a single night of high stakes roulette in a London casino, with plenty of other losses in the millions of dollars.

While playing poker with a Texas businessman who was trying to impress Packer with the fact that he was worth $60 million, Packer reportedly took out a coin and coolly stated:

“I’ll flip you for it.”

4. The Blackjack Bum – Shoeless Joe

While his identity was never revealed, an old man (reportedly kicked out by his wife and lacking in personal hygiene) walked in shoeless and cashed his $400 Social Security check and took a seat at a blackjack table at Treasure Island in 1995.

Over the next week he’d proceed to win about $1.5 million, seemingly able to do no wrong despite the fact that he ignored basic blackjack strategy (always splitting tens and doubling down on hands such as hard 12s and hard 13s).

His abrasive behavior won him no friends, with few tears spilled when he lost it all back and was finally shown to the door when his money ran out.

5. William Lee Bergstrom – What’s Your Table Limits?

Bergstrom walked into Binion’s in the 1980s and declared he wanted to bet $1 million on a single roll at the craps tables. When told he could, he left and came back with a suitcase full of $770,000 in cash and bet it all on Don’t Pass.

The shooter crapped out after three rolls and Bergstrom took his $770,000 in profits and left.

He’d return for a series of similar bets at craps, placing a $590,000 bet (which he won), a $190,000 bet (which he won), and a $90,000 bet (which he won).

Around 1984 he came back for another stab with his biggest bet yet – $1 million – which proved to be one bet too many, as this time he lost, and would go on to commit suicide about three months later.

Online Casinos at the US State Level

This article will give you a heads up on federal and state online gambling laws and what these laws mean for you as an online casino regular.

Federal US Online Gambling Laws

Late in 2006, one day before the US Congress adjourned for the elections, both legislative houses voted in favor of a bill called the SAFE Port Act. This Act of Congress initially covered only port security, but at the last moment an unrelated chapter on online gambling was tacked on.

This part of the SAFE Port Act, Title VIII, is referred to as the “Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act” (UIGEA). It essentially outlaws the processing of transactions from US financial institutions to online gambling businesses (including poker operators).

The UIGEA was signed into a law by president George Bush on Oct. 13, 2006. Compliance with the UIGEA-measures however – with help of an additional six month delay – was required only as of June 1, 2010.

Despite compliance not immediately required, the most serious effect of the anti-gambling law was immediately noticeable. Several big online gambling businesses chose to no longer welcome US online gamblers.

The rationale for this decision was twofold: on the one hand it involved the fear of legal consequences, and on the other hand it was based on the idea that humoring the US Government would be beneficial when online gambling was to be legalized in the future.

Online casino operators like PlayTech, and online poker operators like Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars, chose to stay loyal to their US customers.

Other major companies like Party Gaming, Bwin, and Microgaming took the prudent route and stopped servicing US customers as soon as the UIGEA was signed into law.

Attempt to Override the UIGEA

As far as the future of federal online gambling legislation is considered, all eyes have been on Barney Frank. As the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Frank introduced and sponsored several bills to undo the UIGEA.

In July, 2010 proponents of legalized online gambling were under the impression that the tide was about to turn. Frank’s “Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act” had passed a voting of the US House Financial Services Committee.

Although the first step for this bill – known as HR 2267 – was made, there was not enough time for it to be voted on by the House of Representatives.

At the end of 2010 the term of Congress came to an end, and with a newly elected Congress the bill will have to be re-introduced, again. As a result the short-term outlook for more tolerant federal US online gambling legislation is gloomy.

Online Gambling Laws at the State Level

The UIGEA may have scared away some of the world’s biggest and best online gambling companies, but in no way does it forbid US citizens from placing real-money wagers at US-friendly online casinos.

In practice US citizens can still safely deposit and withdraw money to and from online casinos with certain credit cards (e.g. American Express) or by making use of 3^rd party payment options like e-wallets (e.g. Usemywallet).

The UIGEA merely forbids transactions between US financial service providers and online gambling businesses, so the only potential legal barriers are anti-gambling laws at the State level.

Only 9 US states have laws against online gambling.

All states in the list below do not have laws against online casino gambling, and in effect permit their citizens to gamble at online casinos:

There’s no place where street-dice games are described better than in hip hop. So with a little help from some of the finest MCs ever we’re going to take a deeper look at the game.

U-God teaches you the rules, Kool G Rap tells you how to play the game and Big L warns you about rolling with the wrong crowd in the wrong place at the wrong time.

What is “Cee-Lo ?”

According to U-God from the Wu-Tang Clan, the back-alley dice game Cee-Lo originates from New York.

Other less trustworthy sources, such as Wikipedia, claim that the game was born in China. It’s supposed to be called Sì-Wŭ-Liù meaning "four-five-six."

But what do they know?

Staten Island is Shaolin, a sword fight is like a game of chess and Cee-Lo is from NYC.

I choose to go with U-God on that one.

How to Win in Cee-Lo

In Cee-Lo, you roll three dice up against a wall and the best roll is 4, 5, 6 followed by trips.

If you get a pair, you compare the “kicker” (the value of the pair is irrelevant.)

Six is best and ace (1) is worst.

And like U-God said, “aces will send you home broke.”

Cee-Lo Strategy

Is there a winning Cee Lo strategy?

Well, dice control might be an option for some of the more adept.

The aim is to throw the dice so they’re more likely to land on certain numbers.

Its’ been proven this can be done on clean, felted craps tables, but it’s much harder on a gravel sidewalk.

Another option would be to use “loaded” dice, meaning dice weighted to end up a certain way, but that’s cheating and might get you into trouble.

The best strategy option is to simply roll like Kool G Rap.

Just throw 4-5-6 all the time and you’ll win.

Street Craps

There’s also a street version of regular casino craps.

In this game the shooter rolls two dice and players can bet on either pass or don’t pass.

If the shooter, who is required to bet, rolls 7 or 11, he made the pass and bets are matched.

If the shooter rolls 2, 3 or 12, don’t pass bets are paid.

Any other number becomes the “point” and the shooter carries on rolling until the point comes up, which completes the pass bets, or 7, which completes don’t pass.

Below you can see a video describing the rules. But the big question is: Did this guy actually build his own back alley in his garage?

Build a Slots Robot as a Paper Toy

It’s not too complicated to complete this paper toy. All you need is a printer (preferably color,) a pair of scissors and some glue. Patience is of course an advantage, plus steady hands.

The text in the PDF template is in French, but it shouldn’t be a problem. The only thing you need to know is that you put glue on the areas marked “Coller” and cut where it says “Couper.”
