Korean's Find their Way to Online Gambling Sites More Often

June, 16, 2008

With help of illegal middlemen who change online money into cold hard cash, South Koreans have began to explore the phenomenon of online gambling.

The Korea Times reported that online gambling and gaming is becoming increasingly popular in the nation, especially the gaming website Hangame, is a big hit. The popularity of online gaming and gambling in Korea is approved by the fact that one website is boasting the incredible amount of three million visitors a day. Government officials claim that it is difficult to form an adequate policy against the illegal activities.

The newspaper furthermore states that the games of poker and blackjack are most popular, even so popular that cases of addiction are beginning to show up. MBC TV showed examples of online gamblers who were so addicted that they lost their entire savings.

To prevent the situation from further escalating the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism have proclaimed to increase its efforts in arresting the illegal middlemen, since they provide the fuel for the fire of online gambling. The police will make hundreds of agents available for the raids and preventative actions.

Once again, this example sheds light on the disadvantages of placing the business of online gambling in illegality. Criminals like the middleman will smell profits and cases of addiction cannot be clearly identified and contested, not to speak of the cost of the involved police officers and the missed tax revenues.
