CasinoTop10’s Casino Corner at the Battle of Malta 2014
For anybody not aware of it, the biggest stand alone poker tournament in Malta’s history took place last week and we at CasinoTop10 were there with our very own Casino Corner to provide some much needed rest, relaxation and entertainment to all the Battle of Malta poker players, and spectators alike.
It was an eventful weekend to say the least and while there was tons of poker, entertainment and parties a plenty, mother nature felt the need to throw a rare Mediterranean Cyclone into the mix, just to make sure it would be a memorable event for all involved. Luckily, most of the players didn’t even notice the rampaging winds and horizontal rain. As for everybody else, they were safely tucked away inside the hotel and casino, far away from the madness.
In past events, there wasn’t much to do besides play poker and while that may have been the key ingredient to a successful poker tournament, we felt the whole affair could use just the tiniest dash of excitement for those not immediately involved in poker. We set up our casino corner near the entrance to the event so everybody would have somewhere to relax, somewhere to charge their phone or tablet and somewhere that would allow the players to unwind and take a moment to enjoy a few moments free of chips and cards.
FIFA 15 Battles of Malta
There were three TV’s all set up with the latest FIFA, which proved to be our biggest contribution to the Battle of Malta. For the duration of the entire event, there was barely a moment when someone wasn’t playing a game or two. The notoriously competitive poker players were right in the thick of things and, should you be passing by the casino corner, would often hear screams of “REF! RED CARD, red caaaaaaaaaaaard!” or even “GOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLL!”. A particularly cheeky Italian player even called out for a “FIFA pro” to play as he was bored, only to be beaten by the challenger, before limping off to lick his wounds.
Posing, Pouting, Poker Tricks
We set up a photo booth so everybody could take home a lasting memory of the day. Unfortunately, it only appealed to the various promotion girls attending the event. We set them up with a few props, a decadently sexy background and let them run amok with our mascot, ‘Camilla’.
For those that didn’t enjoy taking photo’s and for those with quick fingers and slick moves, we set up a camera and got them to showcase those skills in our chip tricks section. We set them up with a pack of cards and some chips and whoever had the best tricks for the day, won him or herself an entrance to the next day’s poker game. The video for that will be up soon, so keep looking for it on CasinoTop10.
The Island Sanctuary
It wasn’t all fun and games though, we took the opportunity to help out the Island Sanctuary, a local Maltese pet rescue home that cares for any stray or abandoned dogs in Malta. They set up a booth and were selling adorable trinkets, calendars as well as accepting donations from the poker players who, credit to them, had very deep pockets and altogether, helped raise nearly three hundred euros for the little doggies. Even one of our staff members got into the swing of things and sponsored a little fella called ‘George’ for the year.
And So It Ended
All in all, it was quite a good event for all involved. Granted, most of us were working the whole time, but between banter with the poker players, free buffet dinners, parties and the “occasional” trip to one of the many bars, it was an entertaining weekend to say the least. It wasn’t all about poker though and the casino downstairs did a roaring trade throughout the entire event, as did the many shops and restaurants dotted around the Hilton Hotel. One Pizza place in particular, Ir-Rokna on Church Street (Malta’s oldest Pizzeria), upon seeing our staff badges, thanked us for throwing the event and sending so many hungry customers their way and gave us a discount on the lunch we just finished. If you’re ever in the area, pay them a visit, definitely one of the best Pizzeria’s on the island.
If you missed this year’s event, there’ll be another one next year. A bigger one. And you can bet, we’ll be there again so if you’re in the area, come pay us a visit.
