The Most Important Stories of 2012

-       Nevada Casinos Big Losers in 2011

The lingering recession is still having a profound effect on the many casinos operating with Nevada and for the third year in a row, casinos have finished the year in the red. Vegas casinos, unlike those in Lake Tahoe or Reno, have not suffered as badly due to the various tourist attractions and conventions that are often held in Las Vegas. Even though Las Vegas has fared better, they are still suffering at the hands of Macau, despite the fact that many Vegas casinos owners have properties in Macau. Only time will tell if Vegas can survive these troubling times.

-       Momentum Grows for Online Gambling in the US

Despite its rocky start and clear objections from the likes of Sheldon Adelson who has thrown money at Republican candidates in an effort to stop it, online gambling has continued to grow. Currently, online gambling is only legal in Nevada (poker), with California set to pass a bill as well. At the forefront of the new age, is New Jersey who have legalized all forms of online gambling, as long as it’s within its state borders.

-       Casino Mogul Adelson Backs Romney in a Big Way

Sheldon Adelson, Chairman of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, has long been the most vocal opponent to online gambling. Now though, it appears as if he has decided to throw some of his fortune at the problem and has invested $100 million in Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign. Adelson, who was once a democrat, has now thrown his considerable weight behind the republicans in an effort to keep online gambling illegal.

-       Growth Finally Stalls in Macau

Macau has experienced a meteoric rise, the likes of which none could have adequately predicted. Since the first casino opened on the island in 2002, the city has enjoyed continuous growth even though the global recession. Now though, due to the crackdown by the Chinese Government who are targeting the high rollers, growth in the city has stalled.
