When you enter a casino, it can seem like stepping into another world. Flashing lights and ringing sounds surround you -- time and place seem to have no meaning. When in this world, you should be able to speak the language.
Casino Glossary
BUM: Brick and Mortar. Designates a physical, real world casino as opposed to the online version.
Blacks: Hundred dollar chips.
Check: A chip.
Check Change: When the dealer breaks down a big chip into smaller chips for play.
Color Up: When the dealer consolidates smaller chips into big chips for transport to the cashier's cage.
Comps: Casino promotions offered for continued play. Can take the form of free meals, shows or hotel stays.
Croupier, Boxman, Stickman: The various staff members that manage the craps game.
Dealer: The person who deals the table game.
Eye-in-the-Sky: The network of cameras in the ceiling of the casino that provides a complete recording of everything happening on the casino floor for security.
High Roller: Someone who plays at very high stakes. Also called a Whale.
Nickels/Reds: Five dollar red chips.
Quarters/Greens: Twenty-five dollar green chips.
Rating: To get comps, you must have your play rated. The casino will give you a card that you give to the dealer whenever you play. This way, the casino can keep track of your action.
Pit Boss: The staff member who runs a particular gaming area.
Slots: Slot machines.
Table Game: A game played against a dealer at a table designed for this purpose, like blackjack, craps or roulette.
