The Baccarat Glossary

Baccarat is a game that is not nearly as difficult as it appears. While high rollers usually play this classic game for extreme sums of money, it may well be the simplicity of the game that inspires its popularity amongst the upper class, rather than the complexity. With the knowledge of just a few simple terms, you'll be able to talk baccarat with the best of them.
Baccarat Pit: A roped off, private area where high rollers can in relative privacy. Not necessarily an actual "pit," in fact, some baccarat pits are elevated compared to the rest of the casino.
Chemin De Fer: A baccarat variation in which the player takes a more active role in the game. This is the baccarat version James Bond is seen playing in several movies.
Hit: To take a third card. The rules for whether or not the player or dealer gets a third card are pre-established, and does not allow for more than one hit.
Mini-Baccarat: A faster, lower stakes baccarat game played on the regular casino floor instead of in the baccarat pit.
Natural: An eight or a nine, the ideal point count totals in baccarat. If dealt a nine, the player automatically wins unless the dealer also gets a nine. If dealt an eight, the player automatically wins unless the dealer gets an eight or a nine.
Stand: Not to take any cards. See Hit.
Trend: A pattern in player or banker wins. Players note the frequency of wins on a sheet provided for this purpose in order to try to identify a trend for which they can bet.
