Matt Lauer is apparently very sad that New Yorkers are screaming at him.
Lauer seems to be having second thoughts after reportedly demanding in contract negotiations that Ann Curry be removed as his co-host on NBC's "The Today Show."
According to TMZ, he's "freaked out" by the number of people who scream at him on the streets of Manhattan, blaming him for Curry's firing from the show.
A source close to Lauer told TMZ that he regularly hears "You're a bad guy," "You got Ann fired," and other choice tidbits -- although we imagine that many New Yorkers use more colorful language than that.
Apparently poor Lauer feels abused and mistreated, although he does have his new $25 million salary per year to console himself with.
Curry left the show in June 2012 in a controversial exit that was widely blamed on Lauer and contract demands he negotiated in April 2012.
He's been at "The Today Show" since 1994 and was named an official co-anchor in 1997 when Bryant Gumbel stepped down.
It hasn't been a stellar year for Lauer despite the big contrac. His turn doing commentary for the 2012 Summer Olympics was universally panned as exceptionally "banal" and "ignorant."
NBC is reportedly not super-enthused to stick with Lauer on "The Today Show" but doesn't really have any up-and-coming anchor stars waiting in the wings.
