Laura Dern has reportedly restarted divorce proceedings with husband Ben Harper, picking up where the troubled couple left off two years ago when Harper filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences.
Dern, 45, and Harper, 42, married in 2005 after five years of dating. They have two children -- ages 10 and 7 -- with Dern's recent divorce filing seeking primary custody of their kids as well as money for spousal support and child support.
Harper filed for divorce in October 2010, citing irreconcilable differences; at the time he sought joint custody and asked the judge to deny Dern spousal support.
The couple had tried to patch things up and appeared to be on the mend earlier in the year, appearing together at various award ceremonies include the Golden Globes where Dern won an award for Best Actress in a Comedy for her role on Enlightened.
Various sources are reporting that Dern has hired high-powered divorce lawyer Laura Wasser to represent her in the divorce proceedings. Dern claims that she's not only been the primary caregiver to the couple's two children but that she played a significant role in caring for Harper's two children from a previous marriage.
Prior to hitching up with Harper, Dern dated Nic Cage, Kyle MacLachlan, Jeff Goldblum and Billy Bob Thornton, to whom she was engaged when he abruptly married Angelina Jolie in 2000: "I left our home to work on a movie, and while I was away, my boyfriend got married, and I’ve never heard from him again."
Harper and Dern met at one of Harper's concerts in 2000, with the two dating for five years before getting married. It was Harper's second marriage, with he and his first wife Joanna tying the knot in 1996.
Harper is a two-time Grammy winner, winning awards for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album in 2005.
