Apparently the mastermind behind the plot was convicted criminal Dana Martin, who is serving two life sentences for rape and murder in New York.
Martin concocted the plot to kill Bieber at one of his shows at Madison Square Garden in New York in November, recruiting a former cell mate of his named Mark Staake.
Staake in turn recruited his nephew Tanner Ruane to do the dirty work, with the bizarre plan involving Ruane strangling Bieber and his bodyguard with a paisley tie and then castrating them both with pruning shears.
Ruane reportedly was arrested at a gas station with the pruning sheers and other necessary equipment as well as documents detailing the murder plot; Staake was also arrested in November for an unrelated crime involving aggravated burglary with a deadly weapon in New Mexico.
How exactly was the plot foiled? Details are scarce but apparently the mastermind Martin had second thoughts, turning in the same accomplices he recruited before Bieber met an untimely end.
Martin apparently is a big Bieber fan himself, with a tattoo of the young pop star on his leg. Martin reportedly had plans to knock off several other people as well, but the Biebs was the center of his attention.
It's not the first time that Bieber has been at the center of controversy and death threats; last October concerns were raised over a concert in Peru when someone created a Facebook page to threaten to kill Bieber, warning that playing the show would be "the biggest mistake" of his life.
